We will spend part of our first day of class (Wednesday) in the woods behind the Biology building. Please dress for the weather (sunscreen and a hat if its hot and sunny, rain gear if its not). Bring a waterproof field notebook (available at the Duke Bookstore for <$10) and a pencil. We will meet in our classroom (BioSci 060) for introductions before heading out into the field.
Ahead of class, please jot down some thoughts in reaction to the following questions 1. How do you define "nature"?; 2. What has been your favorite experience in the natural world? why?; 3. How do you think your experience of nature thus far is likely to affect your experience in this class?; 4. What are you most excited about and worried about with respect to this class. These reflections are intended to facilitate our ice breaker activity, but will not be handed in and thus don't need to be neat or edited. Room 060 is a little tricky to get too. It is in the BioSci basement (not sub basement) directly underneath the administrative offices. I suggest you get there by walking down into the plaza in front of French Science from Science Drive, and heading down the first set of outdoor stairs on your left - go in the door directly underneath the elevated walkway into the first floor. If you do that, our classroom will be on your left after you get into the basement. The combination to get in the door is 4312. If you have questions, please post them as comments here so we can answer them for everyone.
